What we mean by staying aligned is to always align your ship to a quick exit out of a possible hostile situation, this is especially true if you are gate camping or ratting in Null sec space.
One of my early Eve deaths was when I was camping a gate in low sec, we were waiting for a hostile pirate gang, we knew they would come, the question was which gang would fire first, we obviously wanted the pirates to shoot first so the gate guns would fire on them and not us.
As it turned out we had to fire first and so took the gate gun fire as well as fire from the pirates, the battle went well but the gate guns finally started to hurt my poor cruiser but I had aligned my ship to get out fast and so I hit the warp button and more or less instantly warped out to safety away from the gate guns.
Ummm, like a dodo I had aligned my cruiser to the station and warped straight into the stations gate guns, Doh.
If you take gate gun fire in a low sec system, all gates in that system will fire on you and likewise all stations will fire on you untill your aggression countdown runs out.
What I should have done is aligned to a planet or asteroid belt and better still a safe spot.
