Pirates abound in Eve Online and just like all the other professions in the game there are many facets to the ways and tactics a pirate will use.
The good news is just like everything else in the game you don't need mega skills to be a good pirate just as any other PVP,er doesn't need to be in the biggest, baddest and most highly skilled battleship to be effective, Ive seen a newish player in a lowly frigate kill a battleship piloted by a player over 12 months old. The higher skills do not necessarily mean you can automatically kill newer players in this game.
Pirates operate in High sec, Low sec and Null sec but are far more prevalent in Low sec space due in no small part to the easy pickings without Concorde intervening.
Solo pirating and small gang pirating is usually the norm with more emphasise on small gang, a small gang of 1 month old pirates can easily take the bigger ships down when they work together as a team.
